Lavander: Lavender was discovered in Persia and the Canary Islands, and brought to Provence during the Roman times. It was used to scent baths and to wash clothes. The name of the plant came from the use made of it, and is the expression of the close relationship between the fragrant, blue-tinged plant and the lovely lavandières, or washerwomen, laboring along the riverbanks..

THE LAVANDER ROADS
Coustellet: The Lavender museum (collection of stills, video, direct sales). The farmers’ market on Sunday mornings. Claparèdes plateau. Lavender fields. Bories. The honey makers at La Miellerie du Mas des Abeilles (lavender honey) - Bonnieux.

Apt: The distillery Les Coulets (July/August) and the Borde distillery.

Lagarde-d’Apt: Lavande 1100, organic farming and beekeeping, aromatic plants and lavender, distillation in July and August. Goat cheeses at the ferme des Espagnols.

Between St.-Christol and Sault (capital of fine lavender) drive along lavender fields. The Lavender Conservatory Garden (collection of 100 varieties, theme classes). La Maison des Producteurs, a cooperative for lavender, honey, aromatic plants… The Nature Discovery center, with exhibitions.

The lavender trail, a 4-km foot path with informative signs. The André Boyer nougat shop. Lavender distilleries (August).

The limonaderie du Ventoux, makes lemonade and syrup using lavender. The Lavender Festival in Sault on 15 August.

Aurel: The village, fortifications and church. Many craftspersons.

Did you know ?
Dried bouquets of lavender are made with lavender varieties selected for their intense blue color, which lasts long past drying. This particular variety, known as the “lavande super bleue”, is essentially grown in the Drôme and Vaucluse.
