MELON : The Cantaloupe melon ... the name alone irresistibly calls Provence to mind. In the fields the melon lazes the summer away, soaking up the sun and growing rounder, fatter and juicier as August draws to an end. At the marketplace, it is a feast for the senses - the color, the fragrance, the weight as you get a feel for your preferred choice... Arranged in slices, it exudes the pure joy of its fragrant flesh, with its extraordinary texture, brimming with natural sweetness, and radiating its incredible orange color. “When your hosts serve Cavaillon melon as a starter or as dessert, it’s a bit like being served a plateful of sunshine from Provence”..

THE FRUIT

Melon too has been around for ages. Beloved by the Romans, melon appeared in Provence in the late Middle Ages. An elegant fruit, it is referred to in the municipal archives in Cavaillon as a gift to the famous dignitaries who came through Cavaillon in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, production of the Cavaillon melon became widespread and the city grew in prosperity. Shipments of melon from Cavaillon started in the late 19th century. Melons grown throughout Provence continue to be shipped from Cavaillon. The history of the Cavaillon melon holds many chapters and many varieties. There was the “embroidered” melon, which is an ancient variety, then the “melon de Malthe” or winter melon with white, sweet flesh. The melon behind the fame of Cavaillon is the “Cantaloup” or Charentais, grown starting in 1925, a smooth or textured type, grown in greenhouses and the open field, producing 40,000 tons annually, on 130 hectares melon fields. Vaucluse remains a special place for growing this king of the Cucurbitaceous family.

THE MELON MUSEUM
In Jean-Jacques Prévôt’s restaurant, with its atmosphere of a theater stage, a crèche scene come to life, the melon is king. He has displayed rare and unusual objects from his collection, each with its own history and interest. This private collection includes some 600 melon related items, with barbotine from the Napoleon I era, pewter sherbet molds from the early 1900’s, lithographs on the melon dating back to 1771, old gardening books and many paintings by artists from Cavaillon and elsewhere.

Did you know ?
Alexandre Dumas was so fond of the melon from Cavaillon that he reached a deal with the city of Cavailon. He donated 300 volumes of his work in exchange for a lifetime supply of 12 melons per year! His donation helped found the municipal library of Cavaillon.

The Cavaillon Tourist Office organizes a melon discovery day, with a visit to the melon beds, and tasting of the melon-based products.
Every Friday morning.

TIP FROM cavaillon HOUSEWIVES
To select a good melon, first trust your nose. A ripe melon should exude a light fragrance. Then, it should be heavy. If it slightly cracked at the stem end, this is a good sign of ripeness. If the remaining stem is ready to break off easily, this also indicates ripeness.
