PURPLE MUSCAT: Vineyards are justly famous for their gorgeous grape varieties, with all they contribute to the making of wine. But grapes are also grown for pure and simple eating, and Vaucluse produces some of the best. A few years ago, large green grapes were widely grown, but tastes have changed, and sweet sweet grapes are now in favor. Vaucluse has progressively turned to increased planting of a purple grape that is well adapted to the sloped fields. Today, Vaucluse grows 43% of all the grapes in France, and is the top grape-growing county. Grapevines for table grapes are concentrated on the slopes around Mont Ventoux and the Luberon, in the open field and under shelter. Here, more than 400,000 tons of table grapes are grown. Among them, most are the Muscat variety, and most are the A.O.C. Muscat du Ventoux. Indeed, since 1977, the Muscat de Ventoux has been labeled a guaranteed origin – appellation d’origine contrôlée – with strict production specifications resulting in an excellent product. Over 400 Vaucluse growers grow the Muscat du Ventoux on 1150 hectares of grapevines.

THE FRUIT

Purple grapes dominate in Vaucluse. In mid-July, the “Prima” variety ripens the earliest, followed by other early varieties such as Ora, Cardinal and Lival, found on the market stalls as of late July. The sweet Muscat grape ripens in mid-August through to early October, primarily along the slopes of Mont Ventoux. It accounts for 52% of the production of table grapes, followed by the lovely “Alphonse Lavallée”, ripened under the Luberon sun, with 21% of the market.

FROM THE VINE TO THE TABLE
“Table grapes are not harvested. They are picked, like fruit, handled like a precious gem, and placed carefully in their bedding like a fragile object”. Table grapes are more delicate than most other fruit, and require careful, quality picking and packaging. Grape clusters are snipped with scissors, meticulously cleaned and packed in crates right on the production site.

Did you know ?
The leaves on the vinestock play an important role. During photosynthesis, they make sugars which then accumulate in the grape berries. The more leaves there are, the sweeter the grapes - though of course the leaves have to be exposed to the sun.
A PASTRY CHEF'S AVICE
